Automatic Gearbox Flush, but it says filled for life?

The majority of Jaguar & Land Rover (JLR) models use sophisticated automatic gearboxes such as the ZF 6HP and 8HP units. Which the manufacturer of these gearboxes recommend servicing at 60,000 miles

Many Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) models use sophisticated automatic transmissions such as the ZF 6HP and 8HP units. Although JLR often refer to these units as “filled for life”, ZF themselves recommend servicing the gearbox every 60,000 to maintain optimum performance and longevity.

  • Why change it

The fluid within the gearbox is not simply a lubricant, it performs several critical functions:

    -Lubricates internal components

    -Cools the gearbox

    -Applies hydraulic pressure to clutches

-Transmits power through the torque converter

Automatic transmissions places significant stress on the oil causing degradation over time.

  • Oil degradation leads to:

    -Judder

    -Harsh or delayed gear changes

    -Noises and vibration

    -Overheating

    -Premature internal wear

With the high costs of transmission repairs, preventative servicing is far more economical than reactive repair.

  • Will a gearbox flush fix gearbox problems?

A gearbox flush should always be considered as a preventative maintenance procedure and part of the routine maintenance of a vehicle, with the aim not being to repair.

However, there are cases in which a transmission has been diagnosed as faulty and can be driveable after a flush, with the improvement being either short term or long term, as each vehicle responds differently.

  • Why a flush instead of a drain?

A standard drain and fill only removes 45-60% of the old oil, leaving the remaining degraded oil to mix with the new oil as soon as the car is driven.

The professional flush replaces 92%-95% of the fluid, ensuring the new ATF provides proper lubrication, cooling and hydraulic performance.

For the best outcome, the flush can be combined with a new sump pan and filter, although this increases the overall cost.
